KeptAtlas runs in your browser and needs no account. Open it, type a place, and you are standing there. If something is not working, write to us at info@svltmk.com and a person will read it.
Getting started
- Open the app on your phone or your computer.
- Type an address, a landmark or just a city, and press Stand there.
- Look around. Drag to turn, and hold the forward control to keep walking.
- When a place matters, keep it. Give it a year and a line about what happened there.
On a phone you can add it to your home screen and it opens like any other app, full screen, with no browser bars. On iPhone that is the share button and then Add to Home Screen. On Android it is the browser menu and then Install.
Common questions
Do I need an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for and no password to forget. That is also why your atlas lives in the browser you made it in, which matters for the backup question below.
What does it cost?
Nothing while it is in beta. Every street you stand on costs us something to show, so the App Store version will be a paid plan. We will post the price on this page and on the app's own page before anything is charged, and nothing in the beta will ever bill you.
It says it cannot stand at my address
Some streets have never been photographed at ground level, and some countries have very little coverage. When that happens the app does not fail, it moves you up to the view from above so you can still see the block, the roof and the shape of the street. This is expected rather than broken. Trying a nearby corner or the main road at the end of the street often finds ground imagery.
The place I remember is gone, or looks completely different
That is the app working. Street imagery shows the world as it was photographed, and the date it was taken is written on screen so you always know how old the picture is. For places that have really gone, the app looks for archive photographs of the same spot, which is the honest version of the same wish. Keeping it on the Gone now shelf is the point.
Can I keep a backup of my atlas?
Yes, and you should. Because there is no account, nothing is waiting in the cloud for you. Inside My places there is Save a copy, which writes your whole atlas to a file you keep, and Bring a copy back, which loads one in.
Please read this before you install it to your home screen on an iPhone. On iPhone, the installed app gets its own separate storage from the browser you were using, so the installed version starts out empty rather than carrying your places across. The order that works is to save a copy first, install it, then bring the copy back.
I cleared my browser data and my places are gone
Clearing a site's data deletes everything the app had saved, and we have no copy to restore because your atlas was never sent to us. If you have a saved copy from before, Bring a copy back will restore it. If not, it cannot be recovered, and we are sorry. This is the trade for an app that never holds your life on somebody else's server.
Can other people see my places?
No. Nothing is public and there is no feed. If you deliberately share one place, the card names the city and never a house number or coordinates, and you see exactly what it looks like before it goes anywhere.
Why is a voice note only on one device?
Recordings are saved on the device you made them on, and version one does not carry audio inside the export file. So a voice note stays where it was recorded. Carrying audio between devices is on the list.
Is there an iPhone or Android version in the App Store?
Not yet. KeptAtlas is a web app today, which is why you can use it right now with nothing to install. A store version is coming, and the fastest way to hear about it is the short form on the app's page.
Something is broken
Tell us. Write to info@svltmk.com and say what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead. What device and browser you were on helps a lot. The app also sends us an anonymous note when it hits an error, which has no personal detail in it, so a message from you with the story around it is genuinely more useful.
